About FIESSA

The Federation of International Elite Sport Associations (FIESA) is the result of a historical and structural evolution in the global governance of sport. Its roots date back to the early 1980s, when it was established in 1981 under the leadership of Dr. Jacques Rogge—a physician, Olympic athlete, and prominent figure within the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Originally conceived as a specialized advisory body within the IOC, FIESSA was created to offer a strategic, analytical, and interdisciplinary framework for the identification and development of elite athletes on a global scale.

Unlike traditional sport federations, FIESA did not focus on organizing competitions, but rather on designing elite development models, talent identification systems, and educational frameworks adapted to diverse cultural and geopolitical contexts. It remained an integral consultative structure until the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where, by majority vote of its General Assembly, FIESA was officially restructured into an independent international federation.

FIESA and the Global Institutional Framework: Collaboration with UN and UNESCO

From its inception, FIESA positioned itself at the intersection of global governance, education, and diplomacy in sport. Its institutional framework was shaped by three international bodies:

From the IOC, it adopted principles of independence, neutrality, and universality.

From UNESCO, it integrated the mission of promoting peace through education, culture, and intercultural dialogue.

From the United Nations, it embraced frameworks for sustainable development, gender equality, inclusive governance, and human rights.

Thus, FIESA functions as more than a sport federation. It is a transnational institution that leverages the power of elite sport for peacebuilding, cultural diplomacy, and global development.

Leadership and Mandate

Following the passing of Dr. Jacques Rogge, FIESA’s executive leadership was temporarily managed by its Board of Trustees until the 33rd FIESA World Congress in Beijing (2010), where Dr. Hamid Ansarifar, a recognized expert in elite sport and long-standing member of FIESA commissions, was elected President.

Today, FIESA:

Collaborates with over 70 national and regional sport bodies,

Oversees a global elite athlete assessment and development framework,

Provides policy guidance to international institutions on sport for peace and sustainable development.

FIESSA: Championing Sport for Peace and Human Advancement

At a time when sport is recognized as a vehicle for diplomacy and societal transformation, FIESA plays a pioneering role in bridging the gap between competition and social responsibility. With its focus on talent cultivation, leadership development, and the promotion of universal values through sport, FIESA stands at the forefront of the international movement to use sport as a tool for peace, solidarity, and sustainable human progress.
